February … flat or fab?

Have you noticed that it’s possible to squeeze all sorts of antonyms out of words beginning with the letter ‘F’? They’re commonly seen hanging around on the cover of magazines, acting all flashy and obnoxious in an effort to grab our attention as we walk by. Things like from ‘flab to fab’, from ‘fat to fit’, and from ‘fact to fiction’. I’m going to jumble those around a bit and come up with a new one, from ‘flat to fab’ because that’s kind of what I’m hoping the rest of February becomes. More fab, less flat.

I don’t know if it’s just me, but my February has certainly been feeling a bit flat and not in a nicely-toned-stomach kind of way, it’s been more in the manner of a punctured-bicycle-tyre-that-gets-you-nowhere kind of way. Perhaps it’s the crash that comes after all the planning and goal-setting that happens in the shiny new month of January? Whatever the reason for this feeling, there’s still some time to turn this month around and end it in fabulous fashion. I thought I’d start things off by sharing five nice little somethings that have happened so far this month.

Number One ::: Here are some of the pretty things I currently have hanging on my wall to mask some of its ugliness. Until we prepare to paint, there’s no way I could be bothered filling all the screw holes kindly left in the walls by the previous owner … so I cover them with art instead. One day white paint will fix everything, but for now, there is delight to be found in collected prettiness.

Some collected pretties on my wall ...

Number Two ::: The Mr and I don’t really ‘do’ Valentine’s Day, but he snuck in a little gift for me anyway. I’ve spoken before about how fussy I am with my pyjamas, and while I’m sure it would be wonderful to elegantly swan about in nightgowns of silk and lace, I like men’s cotton boxer shorts best. Before the Mr gifted me the two pairs below, I was wearing old pairs of his. Aside from being brand new these are much fancier, but they’re still super comfortable.

My new (boy) boxer shorts

Number Three ::: Long-term readers of this blog would know about ‘Pasta‘ (my resident birdie friend) and his baby ‘Noodle’. Well I’m happy to say that there is now a new kid in town. I’ve christened this little fellow ‘Penne’. Just before I took this photo all three of them were sitting in a row, taking a moment to shelter from the rain … so cute!

Pasta's new baby bird

Number Four ::: I always thought the line between cat owner and crazy cat lady would be quite clearly defined, but perhaps things are a little hazier than I thought. Now I’m not a big make-up wearer, but I just happened to be looking for a new blush and lipstick when I discovered these kitty cat inspired designs. Aside from the pretty packaging, the lipstick has little embedded pawprints and as you can see the blush has a lovely neutral palette in the shape of a cat. These are ‘almost’ too good to use, but use them I must.

Number five ::: I’m coming towards the end of my ‘couch to 5k’ running program, and while at times I’ve thought I might die, I’m actually really happy with the progress I’ve made. However the road has not been easy, and was made more difficult because my heels are prone to blisters. But thanks to the wonders of the internet, I discovered a new way of tying my laces to limit heel movement, and also found an ace brand of socks that have made ALL the difference. No blisters for you!

A happy bonus of conducting this little exercise is discovering that there have actually been some pretty fabulous things about February. Here’s hoping I can add quite a few more to this list before the month is out. Thankfully it’s a leap year, so I’ll have an extra day to work with. Are you on the ‘flat’ to ‘fab’ program too?

  1. Libby, Vintage Aplomb

I have noticed that February is seeming a bit flat these days. I’ve been taking solace in the fact that it’s quickly drawing to a close, but you’re right – there’s still time to end it in a fabulous fashion! I’m very inspired by your couch to 5k program – what will power! I just signed up for a Zumba class that meets twice a week for the month of March, so I’m hoping to get fit myself. Also, I, too, hover the line between crazy cat lady and cat enthusiast, and I am obsessed with the Paul & Joe cat make-up. I just might have to get some myself!

    1. tracey (Post author)

Hi Libby – Thank goodness March is just around the corner … surely IT has to be a great month! I really recommend the couch to 5k program … I’m amazed at the progress I’ve made, it’ll be interesting to see if I can make it right through to the end.

Zumba would be really fun … I’m pretty uncoordinated when it comes to dance moves, so I’ve avoided doing any of the classes so far – best of luck with it!

You should definitely get yourself some of the Paul & Joe makeup … it’s really lovely … come and join this crazy cat lady! 🙂

  2. Teresa

Maybe the flat feeling is also partially due to Summer nearly being over? I always felt February, even though it’s the shortest month of the year, would take forever to end and move into my favourite season… fabulous Autumn! 🙂

That lipstick is adorable! Definitely almost too good to use.

    1. tracey (Post author)

Hi Teresa – Hmm, you may just be right there … thank goodness that autumn will very soon be here. I can’t wait to get back into cold weather gear … you, you lucky thing are already in it! 🙂

It’s a really lovely lipstick, those paw-prints are so cute!

  3. Teresa

Oh… and just to help define the line between cat owner and crazy cat lady a little more… I thought of you when I saw this vintage dress http://www.etsy.com/listing/93636033/1960s-cat-print-dress 😉

    1. tracey (Post author)

Haha, as soon as you linked to that dress I went ‘OH MY GOD, I WANT IT’ … and promptly popped it into my favourites … but I just couldn’t justify buying another dress … I was almost relieved when someone bought it, just so I wouldn’t be tempted in a weak moment. 😉

  4. Lucent Imagery

Oh yes, I’m getting that vibe from all around too. Blog world has seemed extra quiet this week as well. For me, I have found myself wishing summer over faster so that my sensitive skin can seek relief. I’ve never wished seasons away before, but I will be pleased when Autumn kicks in. What brand of socks have you found? My current ones are starting to wear out. Love this post my dear.x

    1. tracey (Post author)

Hi Lucent Imagery – Here’s hoping that we can sweep this month behind us … and yes, bring on that cooler autumn weather. Hopefully a cool change will calm your sensitive skin.

The socks I’ve found for running are by ‘Hilly’, they’re the ‘twin skin’ version and they are amazing … expensive, but amazing!! xx

  5. woolf

there’s always spring. i know it’s no comfort to you guys down under, but february in its own right does feel kind of flab round here. winter shaking its last woody legs, spring too shy to bloom, the colour of the sky a relentless grey shade… interesting to read you have your own gloomy feb.

    but i like the trinkets you show a lot; they have just brightened up another grey day to happen upon us. oh, those bouts of inspiration! i like your wall art, and i want your running shoes. {of course, i’d use them to walk only.}

    1. tracey (Post author)

Hi Woolf – Well we have autumn just around the corner here in the land of Oz and I couldn’t be happier … it’s such a lovely season. I hope the winter greys shake themselves away in your part of the world soon.

I’m glad I brought a little brightness to your day … those shoes are my constant companions, and come very well recommended (by me) for walking too. 🙂

  6. Hila

I’ve been thinking of buying that Paul and Joe cat-themed make-up too, I don’t care if that does make us crazy cat ladies 🙂

I’m finding myself constantly tired this month. I think it’s just anti-climax after submitting the book. But I’d like my energy back. I hope there’s more fab and less flat for us both.

    1. tracey (Post author)

Hi Hila – Haha, yes us crazy cat ladies need to stick together, and wear amazing cat-themed makeup too! 😉

I hope you get some of your energy back soon, but you’re probably right … after submitting your book it’s understandable that you’ve been feeling a little flat.

Let’s look forward to a wonderful March. xx

  7. danica

It’s funny that you should mention a punctured bicycle tyre because that is exactly what I got this month – literally! That aside it hasn’t been too bad a month. I must admit that I always start to feel a premature sense of relief as March and autumn approaches, as I am always awaiting a respite from hot weather.

Good on you for staying committed to your exercise regime – that is definitely a fab element to you February!

    1. tracey (Post author)

Hi Danica – Well I’m glad to hear that (apart from the flat tyre), your month hasn’t been too bad. But yes, like you I love the cooler weather and will be glad to leave heat and humidity behind.

Thanks for the exercise praise … I’m feeling like I’m finally making progress, and that’s always a good thing. 🙂

  8. Debby

Love this post Tracey. When I caught the title I immediately thought you meant stomaches…I misread ‘fab’ for ‘flab’ probably because I’d just zipped up my jeans…which is much more difficult to do in February than it was in December!

I know what you mean about this time of the year. In the autumn we have Halloween and then Christmas to plan for then suddenly January is grey and summer seems a long way off. But now the snowdrops are blossoming and spring is in the air…another 17c forecast today…thinking about summer clothes and alfresco dining…yey…

    1. tracey (Post author)

Hi Debby – Haha … goodness, I know the trouble with zipping up jeans … those festive months can make things a little more difficult for us in the new year … but at least we got to enjoy lots of delicious food (totally worth it).

I wish for you lovely warmer weather sooner rather than later, as for me I’m so happy that autumn starts for us tomorrow. You know how I adore the cool change.

  9. Valerie

Well… I hope March is nice and shiny for you!

    1. tracey (Post author)

Hi Valerie – Thanks so much … I hope you have a wonderful March too! 🙂

  10. Camila Faria

Well, I think your february has been pretty fab! Love the new boxer shorts, I’m also all about comfort pyjama-wise. The make-up is beyond cute, I don’t think I’d ever get the courage to use it! Too sweet!

    1. tracey (Post author)

Hi Camila – It’s funny how I was feeling really negative about the whole month, until I came to write about it … and then I found all these lovely things. I’m going to try and be brave about using the makeup, but I know … it’s so sweet! 🙂

  11. sarah.goodtogether

That blush is a work of art! As for February, since it’s well on its way to March, I’d say we’re quickly headed into fab 🙂 but otherwise, not much in Feb’s favor.

    1. tracey (Post author)

Hi Sarah – I know, how lovely is that make-up? Anything cat is pretty hard for me to resist, especially when it’s this pretty. Yes, yes … bring on that wonderful March I say! 🙂

  12. bobbi

it’s been super cold here and I hated it. Now it is finally getting back to a normal temperature, and the sun is shining. My February was very flat because of this, I’m Italian, I can’t stand cold weather for too long.

And thank you for your sweet words about my little Milo. I loved him so much and I am happy he didn’t feel a thing. He just went away…I miss him so much when i’m in the studio, because that was his favorite room, but I’m happy he didn’t feel any pain. A perfect life isn’t necessary a long one, someone told me. And it’s true. Sad, but it’s true.

Oh, and I absolutely adore those birdies!! I can’t wait until our resident owls make babies again.

    1. tracey (Post author)

Hi Bobbi – I know how much you love the heat of summer … I’m so glad to hear the sun has been shining again for you and the days are getting warmer.

I was so sad for you and Milo Bobbi … sending you a kind word felt like the least I could do. It’s so sad when any of our animal friends leave us, but it is good to know the he was not in any pain. How lucky for him that he was able to enjoy his life with you. xx

It is so wonderful to see this little bird family grow … it will be great to see your resident owls return again to nest. Birds are such lovely creatures. 🙂

  13. Linda from Heartfire At Home

Ooh, I LOVE the pretty little collection of wall art! I cover a multitude of sins with things stuck onto walls…. blutac is my favourite decorating must have, everything gets stuck on with it!

The boxer shorts are very cute, thoughtful gift I reckon! We exchanged cards on Val Day and went out for dinner, both of which were nice. Not much for presents either usually (although flowers would have been good!)

My February has been work, work, work basically 7 days a week. I vaguely remember in the not too distant past saying I was going to try the couch to 5k running program. Hmmmm… I only just remembered when I read your post. Nothing happening there for me. Glad you’ve had success!

    Linda. xox

    1. tracey (Post author)

Hi Linda – It’s nice to stick things on walls … I’ve actually found those reusable, non-damaging wall stickers are great for making little informal art displays on my walls.

Going out to dinner for Valentine’s Day would have been lovely … we did think about doing that, but we’re pretty lazy when it comes to leaving the house! 😉

Your February does sound extraordinarily busy … I hope March brings more calm times your way. xx

  14. laura (see hear say)

love this post tracey! yes my feb has been a little flat as well, but this year i have been doing a monthly goal and i’m kind of close to finish with mine for this month which is updating my portfolio site, thank goodness for the leap year it gives me an extra day for this! and i’m looking forward to next month goal the march challenge do something different everyday, glad you’re joining in too!

    1. tracey (Post author)

Hi Laura – I have no doubt that March will be amazing for us both!! It sounds like your February was productive at least – updating your portfolio site is a great goal to kick.

I’m looking forward to the ‘do something different everyday’ challenge too … it’s going to be lots of fun. 🙂

  15. louise

Oh, can I join the flat Feb group too? Mine is due to low energy levels post exhibition install. I think exhaustion might be the right word. I very much like your new bird friend and cat goodies too. xolj

    1. tracey (Post author)

Hi Louise – You most certainly can join in with the flat February group … there seems to be a lot of that mood going around. But what an achievement your exhibition is!! I hope you catch up on rest and relaxation soon.

I never can resist friendly birds or cute cat pretties. xx
      Here’s to a wonderful March! 🙂

  16. Andrew

Cheers for sharing five items from your February.

Impressed with the couch to 5k, would love to read more about that process.

The cat inspired make-up is awesome, but alas you’ve crossed into the crazy lady world…. but why not?! It’s cool. I miss having a cat, but one day I will again.

    All the best

    1. tracey (Post author)

Hi Andrew – Glad you liked my ‘five fabulous things’ Andrew. I will have to do a post about my return to running … it’s been interesting, and I certainly wouldn’t have got to where I am without the app.

Haha, well I don’t mind being a crazy cat lady if I can wear make-up like that … cats are great (but I’m pretty partial to most animals). 🙂

  17. Sandrine

Good on you Tracey for that couch to 5 km! It is amazing how good it is for the body and soul! Well done .
Hope March is much fab! xx

    1. tracey (Post author)

Hi Sandrine – Thanks so much … I’ve really been enjoying the couch to 5km program, and fallen in love with running again. 🙂

I’m really enjoying March so far … and getting some big thoughts sorted out, so I’m hoping I’ll be more focussed soon. 🙂

  18. Christine

absolutely! 🙂 Wonderful post. and thank you for having my little postcard on your wall. This made my February a million times fab’er 🙂 Hugs

    1. tracey (Post author)

Hi Christine – I’m so glad you enjoyed this post, and you know how much I love your lovely creations (I have them on rotation). 🙂
