Things that lie within and in-between

I’m starting to suspect that I may be a little bit greedy – when I really like something, I like it all. I like the inside, the outside, the bits in the middle, and even right up to the very edges of the hard-to-get-to corners.

By way of example – I like the crisp, crunchy outside of a cookie, but I equally love the soft chewy centre … I like peering in the window at the front of a store, and chances are if I like what I see through there, I’ll also like wandering amongst the shelves and racks inside … I like lingering over the cover of a favourite magazine, soaking in the promise of what is contained within, and I like it when that potential is fulfilled as I turn each page … Perhaps it is this greedy love of both inside and out, which sees me take pleasure at both the receipt of mailed packages and the revelation of what lies within.

One package recently arrived is ‘The Elements of In-Between’ – a beautiful book which responds to eleven different films from the unique perspectives of both a writer and an illustrator. The words have been written by the lovely Hila. As a regular reader of her wonderful blog, I’ve long been an admirer of her writing style – she constructs thoughts and sentences in the most intelligent and insightful way. The wonderfully delicate and elegant illustrations by Amy Borrell offer the perfect accompaniment to Hila’s words. This book is like sitting down with two incredibly talented and thought-provoking friends after you’ve finished watching a film together. But instead of having them simply tell you what they thought – you have them show you what they thought in both word and image – two more lasting forms of communication which better allow for ongoing reflection and repeated visits.

The second package recently arrived is a most wonderful collection of goodies filled with exquisite words and beautiful illustrations by the multi-talented (and equally lovely) Gracia and Louise. Aside from being a long-term appreciator (and collector) of their varied artistic works, I also happen to think they are both absolutely delightful (and incidentally, they know just how to pack a bundle of printed loveliness with colour and care). I am powerless to resist such beautiful works from such charming fellow animal lovers.

Lovely package from Gracia & Louise

Lovely package from Gracia & Louise (what lies within)

I feel fortunate indeed to have received such lovely packages in quick succession, and more wonderful still to have loved them both so completely inside and out. I know I’m being a little bit greedy in keeping these all for myself – I hope you don’t mind too much … You could always buy a copy of ‘The Elements of In-Between‘ for yourself if you like, or stop by Gracia & Louise’s store and see what takes your fancy? (see, at heart I’m a generous person)

When it comes to things you like – are you a bit of an all-or-nothing kind of person too? Or maybe you’re a bit more flexible about your likes and dislikes?

Hi Debby – Well I’m very glad to hear I make you giggle … that makes me feel a little better about keeping these lovely books to myself.

I hope you’ve been keeping well and that your weekend was another fabulous one … I’ll catch up with you very soon.
      xx

Lucky you, they look lovely. After visiting you, I’m off to check your links.
Jones looks so handsome. How’s he settling in?

    1. tracey (Post author)

Hi Lynne – I do feel very lucky to welcome such loveliness into my home … though perhaps I shouldn’t spoil myself so often? (my bank account sometimes worries).

Jones is going very well – at the moment he’s catching up on sleep (thank goodness for that because I’ve forgotten how tiring kittens can be).
      🙂

    Mmmmm, cookies……

Sorry, got distracted! I don’t think it’s greedy by the way; it’s living life to the full 🙂

    1. tracey (Post author)

Hi Mel – Haha, it’s always lovely to know a fellow sweet treat lover! 🙂
(there I go again making you hungry).

Living life to the full sounds much better to me than thinking I’m greedy … I’ll go with your definition I think.
      🙂

I am an all or nothing kind of girl . There is no grey to me, only black and white. I would like to be more flexible and I’m working on it, but then i know that it depends a lot on my being so stubborn, and since it is with stubborness that i have made something out of my life…maybe it’s not worth it. Is it so wrong to believe in all or nothing?

    1. tracey (Post author)

Hi Bobbi – Well from one ‘all or nothing’ kind of girl to another … I’m pretty sure there’s nothing all that wrong in believing in ‘all or nothing’.

I’d like to be more flexible and less stubborn too, but they are challenging personality traits to overcome … I suspect I’ll be working on them for a few years yet! 😉

I do like your point about how stubbornness has helped you make something of your life … that’s very true – determination makes us push on through challenges that would otherwise stop us in our tracks.

Yes, I don’t think greedy is the right word. You do get some lovely packages Tracey 🙂 Thanks for the pingback and for doing your wonderful interview.

    1. tracey (Post author)

Hi Gabrielle – Yes that ‘greedy’ description has all sorts of negative connotations, so I think I’ll go with the whole ‘living life to the full’ idea, that’s much more acceptable! 🙂

There do often seem to be lovely packages arriving through the mail – though I am trying not to have *too* many of them dropping by … trouble is, online shopping makes it just too easy to indulge! 🙂

You are so lovely Gabrielle … let’s catch up properly one day – thanks so much for the guest post! 🙂

Looks like a lovely book.I like your little bunny helper, too!

    1. tracey (Post author)

Hi Lilly – It is a beautiful book … given that I love movies and love beautiful illustrations, this book offers the best of both worlds.

PS. I’m glad you like my bunny helper, he’s been a friend for some time now (and is very useful as a page holder it seems).
      🙂

    I don’t think that’s greed, I think that’s taste & appreciation!! 😉 x

    1. tracey (Post author)

Hi Hayley – I’m so glad people don’t think I’m just being a greedy guts … haha!
I could definitely deal with being thought of as having excellent taste! 😉

  10. louise

So glad you’re enjoying our parcel and work inside. It has indeed found a fine home. I should say the wrapping of parcels like yours is all the work of Miss Gracia. She is a brilliant wrapper of zines and the like, and takes much care and delight in presenting our work for good folk like yourself. xolj
PS I agree with you Amy and Hila’s book is a delight.

    1. tracey (Post author)

Hi Louise – Oh yes, very much so. There is always much to delight when a package from yourself and Gracia arrives … the worth within and without is very much appreciated. Clearly the talented Miss Gracia excels at wrapping and packaging – yet another feather in her cap. 🙂

Amy and Hila’s book is most definitely a wonder.

  11. hila

thanks so much for this lovely review of my book with amy, you’re so sweet tracey! Sorry it took me so long to notice, I’ve been having a horrible week (my poor kitty got attacked by another cat, but he’s ok now, post-surgery). I love your treasures by gracia and louise, if I had money now I’d buy everything in their shop! I read your guest post and it’s fantastic 🙂

Hope you’re having a good week.

Hi Hila – You are very welcome … I very much enjoyed the beautiful book you’ve created with Amy, so I thought it only right to tell everyone that! 🙂

I’m sorry to hear your kitty got attacked, but I’m so glad to hear he’s OK now … I’m sure you’re spoiling him rotten as he recovers from his trauma … Gracia & Louise do have the most beautiful of items in their store – it is hard to resist coming away with more lovely goodies.

Thanks for reading my guest post, it was a bit of fun to put together.
I hope your weekend was lovely … as you can tell I’m running behind on everything again, but I’m determined to catch up this week. Have a lovely one Hila! 🙂
